Chiripa excavations: Alejo area - José Luis Paz Soria
This report constitutes a summary of the excavations of 1998 atthe site of Chiripa, in the areas called Alejo. First, it is necessary to mention that both Alejo was selected to because of the high density of formative material and the presence of decorated fragments of Late Chiripa ceramics, the same that were detected with the systematic surface survey.
The parameters that served to locate the units of excavation were: A) small elevations in the land, detectable in the zones of plow, and B) the concentracion of organics in the surface soils. Both indicators gave good results, due to that they discovered important cultural characteristics below the soil (a canal and part of a structure).
This area
was designated Alejo, in honor of the owner of the land, and is located 200
meters to the east of the Montículo. The finds but outstanding are remitted
to a canal and a nitida surface of use that associate to Chiripa Tardio, ademas
of a basural Chiripa Medium. It fits to mention that the assignment of these
periodicidades is bases on the analisis ceramicos of the Dr. Lee Steadman.
With relation to the first characteristic, that is to say, the canal (Event E-5), this has a visible extension of 7.20 m., 30 cm. of wide, an orientation of 460 N.AND. and an inclination of 90. Its tecnica constructive a fine layer of clay as base is comprised of, with walls of three or four rows of small songs rolled that they are you united by clay as argamasa, ademas of flat and long stones to way of covers in the upper part. Interestingly, the beginning of this canal has form of OR and base of stone, and on top was found a batán overturned with a hole to circulate in the middle, the same one that undoubtedly served for the poured of liquids and/or residuos (Figure 18). This canal penetrates in a backfill that contains enough Late Formative material , but in their interior also various fragments were found that correspond to this same period.
Regarding the surface of use (Event E-11), this, is of yellowish color (2.5 YR 3/4), of textura arcillo silty and their grosor varies among the 0.5 to the 3 cm. This characteristic is enough horizontal, and is found concentrated in the immediacies of the canal. Near its surface registered an interesting accumulation of materials, but himself have not been able to detect fragments incrustados.
A third find of this area consists of a small one basural upon the sterile clay, to 60 cm. under this surface of use (Event E-12). This characteristic was located in a sondeo of 1 x 1 m., and has bones of camélidos enough complete that they were not fragmentados by a subsequent use, ademas of ash and songs rolled.
Other gaudy discoveries are an accumulation intencional of stones (Event E-7), that in some sectors reaches but of a meter of grosor, and a possible zone of erosion of adobes (Event AND-8) in the profile this. The martis harris of I Move away this in the Figure 19.
